A shakeout had to come one day or the other, but the COVID-19 lockdowns and the sudden interruption of tourist arrivals will make the process more brutal. I wouldn't be surprised if half the go go bars fold. A lot will hang on whether Thai landlords are willing to reduce rents. Evil Pin-up and Windmill have huge expat support I bet they will be around for a while.....

In some cases the C19 lockdowns were the final straw. On the brighter side, perhaps once tourists start to arrive in great number, then new business will arrive. Landlords may have to reduce their rent of having empty properties for months going down in value

There will certainly be casualties from C19, but there will be people, groups and investors ready to snap up bars that have gone under.

The Chinese will be like vultures all around the world, snapping up defunct businesses, and that does not exclude Patts. 2

Agreed, especially as many bars in Pattaya seem to operate shall we say unconventional business models.

I think those have been the rules for some years, now. Certainly off-sales in the supermarkets, 7-11's etc stuck to those hours, although I can think of a few afternoon gogo's that didn't bother keeping to them.

If they want to change the face of Walking Street into a actual street offering something for families, couples etc then surely go gos may not be an important feature of that new face and could be consigned to the history books. Somebody comes up with a very inclusive plan, a quality future of what Pattaya needs for all may just be the ticket. I agree the entertainment industry has always been a pull for those walking down the street but it is the glitzy look more than the go gos themselves as the majority of people walking down the streets are not necessarily patrons of the go gos. Increase restaurants, pubs and other family style entertainment establishments may see the street being a more attractive pull for many new and old tourists and keep the city leaders happy. Personally I think the gogo's and clubs are the main attraction on the street, even for those not interested on what's happening inside. I see lots of people taking photos with the ladyboys and hello girls, getting pics of the OTT neon signs and rude bar names. It's like the red light district in Amsterdam, they are tourist attractions themselves.

I tend to agree but the Pattaya City fathers are looking for other attractions to offer a new view of what Pattaya is about, I don't think the powers that be see it the same way as most of us. I am sure they big boys in city hall are looking at the many plans to change the face of Walking Street and I doubt that includes maintaining all the go gos as a must have.

Most of the Chinese tourists are just flocking where they are told to flock...... I am sure also that the powers in City hall might be asking certain nations what they do want to see in Walking Street, turning it into a Macau style casino area might be high on the list.
dcfc2007
Word is... The bars and restaurants were absolutely rammed throughout pattaya and jomtien today... The predictions of an apocalyptic closure of bars and restaurants may have been over egged.
