Remember that I am in Bali now, so all the info and pics are the “daily reports” the Miss send me by W.A. Since 2 weeks there is obviously a non-stop activity at home, friends and family being over to help and start to prepare some food stuff. Not a bad thing that I am not there, I know the feeling… A bit like living at the public market ! To give you an idea of quantities : 400 + food gift boxes 900 coconuts 750 kg rice 120 Kgs eggs 20 Kg red sugar (and way more “normal” sugar) 50 packs of cigarettes (remember EVERY male smokes in Indonesia) Bananas, meat etc is still to come A few pics, sorry for the quality ! I put a few vids also, as I think it gives a more lively image than pics. I haven't resized anything as it all came through W.A. and therefore is resized already I think. Sorry if it turns out a bit messy ….. Some backfilling been done at the area where the marquee will be set up. Trying to level and smoothen the surface. Most cooking is still done the old way on wood fire stoves. Small stoves can be bought everywhere : For the bigger ones they are "build on demand" : Note the stock of wood, unlikely we'll run out ! The food gift boxes (later to be distributed to all neighbours, relatives, and friends in / around the village) have been received and “assembled” : Then there are gift bags to be distributed to everybody who has helped in the preparation. They contain useful items like soap, washing powder. A few videos of the teams at work : VID-20190321-WA0011.mp4 5.48 MB · 0 downloads VID-20190324-WA0004.mp4 5.46 MB · 0 downloads VID-20190325-WA0006.mp4 8.57 MB · 0 downloads Dont ask me budget wise where we stand, you know the answer already …….. I am to the jungle next Saturday, more pics to come ! Cheers Interesting, thanks, look forward to the rest and the actual event.
Thai Spice
OK, back in the jungle and starting to follow the events (well, at least trying…..) So first a look around the inventories ! Indeed, there seem to be some serious amounts of stuff around and I had now a look on the real situation. 1 Water (220 ml bottles) : 40 cartons of 48 bottles = 1,920 bottles = 422 Liter Food boxes, as mentioned before close to 500 boxes (470 counted) . Remember these boxes will be distributed in the village and around, to relatives, friends, etc….. The “distribution” operation should be interesting to watch ! The cover on the box act as invitation to the celebration. Funny it mentions also the type of local music that will be played, in our case “Jaranan”. Look it up on YouTube , so you will see what I will enjoy for 24h ! Crackers, made from coconut. Remember a previous pic showing the women rasping coconut (the white stuff) ? Well it is to make these round crackers or snacks. They will be offered to all visitors. In those bags another type of crackers : Visitors are expected to bring gifts, this can be in form of goods (usually rice, oil, sugar) or “red envelopes”. As usual in Asia, in order to maintain good harmony, everything is recorded so that the day any of them has a celebration we know what they offered, and we can reciprocate at same level. Giving less could cause hard feelings, giving more could be taken as boasting or showing off. So there are 2 specific books to record this. One book for the cash (Buku Tamu), this one in fact you will have two : One for the men (Buku Tamu Putra on the picture) , one the women (not yet received….yeah, yeah, why not print them all the same day ?) One book for the goods offerings (Buku Barang), that one for some reason in unisex, maybe because it is only women that bring goods ? Note that for the goods many will offer them a week or two before the event so that it can be used and therefore reduce our expenses. Concerning what we buy (rice, sugar, oil, water,…) the arrangement is that we pay only half of what we take. After the event anything left can be returned to the shop and the balance payment will be arranged accordingly to what we really used. This is a facility that nearly all shops offer, as of course being the main supplier for such an event is a rather big deal for them compared to the usual daily income. OK, I’ll post some more pics and vids of the preparation works next. 1 2

Will be used to help pay for the wedding. In our western cultures we tend to make the gifts to the newly weds to help them start in life. At least in the old days. Here, in the poor areas usually the new couple will live in with one of the parents. In our case they will stay in the Missus house. Its big enough, and personally I find it has the advantage of having somebody in the house to take care of it when we are in Bali. And the son now is also officially responsible for the "farming" part. Keep in mind it is her only kid, sure if there more it would be more complicated, but then I wouldn't be here to start with. 1
Thai Spice
D -3 Yesterday the marquee team installed the tarpolin for the kitchen area, for which we cleared some land just behind the house. They also brought the crockery, plates, etc…. Look at the size of the pans compared to the chair ! Today things are really getting started. The fires were lit at 04:30 to start cooking. Indeed, considering the quantities a lot of the cooking has to be done in advance when possible. And food need to be prepared for all the people that will be here today to help for the preparations. Starting 07:00 am plenty women start to arrive, to help with the coconut rasping (?). And while I am typing the flow continues……. Needles to say the noise is at the level of a market place ! One has to understand that in those rather remote, agricultural villages there is about zero entertainment so any event like a wedding is an occasion for gathering together, exchange some gossip, eat together etc… I think this a very good thing as it allows social cohesion and maintaining good relationships. Note also that 2 very different cultures live together here, and they mix without problem in such occasions. This how it looks 1h later (right now there are even more) : As explained earlier everybody brings some goods (mainly sugar and cooking oil). Everything is sorted, recorded and stored in the store room. The coconuts meat (?) is being rasped and will be used to cook some cakes or buns from what I understand. In order to soften them, they have been immerged in water yesterday (yes, that was our fish pond….) Rain ? End March / early April is the end of the rainy season here, so we should be ok. But anyway, the Miss has arranged for a local “shaman” to be present for the critical days to make prayers and the necessary hocus pocus to chase away the clouds ! OK guys, thats it for this batch. Time for a Bintang for me. After all it's party time ! 3 1

No clue about the "protocol" during the ceremony, although it seems way more relaxed than the Thai thing. And of course being the only white face in a 40 km radius, I am a bit the exotic circus animal....🙈🙈 But hey, the Miss is more stressed than me ! No, seriously for her it is a once in a lifetime thing (only 1 kid) and having a normal life at home after spending close to 15 y as a domestic helper overseas. So, I do my best to fit it and give a good image. It is to note that I am accepted as the "husband" even everybody knows we are not married, which is normally a big nono here in Java. So I have to behave a bit ! 2 1

Thai Spice
D-2 Obviously the serious stuff is starting today ! The women were at work in the kitchen at 03.00 am, so you know it’s gonna be a busy day. Pics taken a bit after sunrise : Red chili anyone ? Women are working, men are sitting, chatting and tasting the food. They got some priorities right here ! From what I understood today we’ll have plenty visitors again, but mostly male. And indeed at 08.30 there are already about 40 or so around, . Sitting together, drinking coffee and smoking (every proper male smokes heavily here…), playing cards and helping out with the cooking of the jelly. A good thing here is that there is no alcohol involved ! But first a few pics from yesterday afternoon. After the coconut job was done, the women started to prepare the leaves in which the food for the boxes will be wrapped. After a bit of questioning I think I finally understood the jelly thing (the one I thought was cake..) It is a jelly made with coconut milk, red sugar, and flour. Made me have to google what is “red sugar”: http://www.taikoosugar.com/en-us/products/detail/36 The coconut milk is brought to boil and kept boiling for 2 or 3 hours, all while stirring it, till is starts to be become a bit consistent. At the same time red sugar, cut in cubes, is melted into a paste. Next the flour, red sugar are added to the coconut milk and continuously stirred till it becomes a thick paste. The stirring of that part started this morning around 05.00 am, it is now 08.30 and it is still going on ! Meanwhile the area in front of the house is slowly transformed in a parking lot….. As I mentioned in previous posts, only a handfull of people have a car around here. This afternoon we should have the visit from some kind of priest, and the marquee team should start setting up the real thing. To be followed….. 2

Thai Spice
D-1 A quick description of what is on the plan today : - - Distribution of the food boxes (hence the early cooking, need to prepare 500 portions of rice + enough to feed the whole crew at work) - - Completing the marquee set up - - Final preparation for tmrw which will be the main ceremony. First some pictures from yesterday afternoon. Decorations were prepared to be offered at the pura (temple) in the evening (sorry for the bleu color, pics were taken under the tarpolin…) This morning the stoves were lit at 03.00 am again by the usual crew. I am impressed by those women's resistance. They work hard, in the heat, sleep very late as in the evening it are endless chats in the living room or on the terrace, and are up at 03.00 am. And the hardest workers are not the youngest ! The box content preparation : The filling of the boxes : The content is rice, chicken, tofu, sticky rice with coconut wrapped in banana leaves, a sweet bun and a few other things. The dispatching : This is handled by the men. A dispatching plan was made yesterday and displayed on the wall this morning. It is grouped by “driver”, the list of numbers are the houses / names where to deliver. The long list are the houses in close vicinity, for that one we used a small truck owned by her elder brother. Each driver has a “delivery sheet”. Usually 2 boxes are given per house. We give 1L of petrol to each motorcycle driver to be fair to him. This morning the “imperial avenue” to the mansion was improved a bit to avoid the guest to have their feet dirty. Cross fingers it doesn’t rain ! We have 4 dogs between us and brother house, and this IS a problem for this kind of event considering a lot of the guests are Muslims. 3 of the dogs are rather old, and stay away from all this hectic action, but the youngest one (which is also known as being my dog) it a bit at loss, not understanding why he is not allowed to roam around the cooking. Hence, he has opted for a safe haven, the frog’s cave, where he spend most of the day. A few notes: - - I am surprised by the organisation. The Miss has zilch experience in this, but luckily there are a few family members who have, and obviously for most of the “crew” it is not the first time they do this. Some are family, most are neighbours. There are no major hick-ups, no last minute panic, no shouting. In fact they would make a very good professional catering team. - - Since yesterday normally no shower is allowed anymore as this may bring rain ….. Now, in the late afternoon I noticed the sky turning dark, announcing rain. The Missus reaction is to throw salt in one of the open fires as it will chase the clouds away …. And of course, at 5.00 pm it starts, not too bad luckily. So I go “well, as the salt didn’t work and it rains now, I can just as well take a shower ? It can’t get any worse, no ?” Agreed, and funny thing is that while I am in the shower the rain stops. I come out of the shower and announce with a big smile to the assistance “You see, for a bulé (farang), it works the opposite way. When I take shower the rain stops !” Missus was not impressed but all the old women had a good laugh. Anyway, I just got a reminder on the subject… - The Miss and everybody seems happy, and this is really an experience to live, so I sure dont regret being here. To be followed. 3 1

Popular Post Thai Spice
D Day (11/04) Well, it has been many, many years since I had an emotional day like that. I will try to put together a detailed separate post only on this but here is a short resumé. I have zero pics about the ceremony, but I hope to be able to extract some shots from the video that was taken : I have seen Thai wedding, Chinese wedding, French wedding (in Britanny) but this is something completely different again. It involves a lot of symbolic actions by the newly weds and their parents. It is the latter that made it very emotional, specially as I was completely caught by surprise. Me being the Missus official companion, recognized unofficially as her husband it was decided by the family (and I guess with the approval of the ceremony masters) that I would act as her husband, and therefore indirectly as her son’s father. The ceremony starts at 09:00 by the family members (brothers, sisters and me) welcoming the guests at the entrance. A small buffet is offered so they can eat while waiting for the start. Next is prayers, a speech by somebody from the temple, chants. A head priest and his assistants (about 10) are present and start the wedding ceremonial next. This involves a lot of symbolic gestures (like crossing a rope on the floor, pushing a coconut, carrying a load (handle with coconuts for the groom, a basket for the bride) 2 times around the altar, etc. First this concerns only the newlyweds, but several steps have the parents involved as well. Now, when you are thrown in this without warning, no clue at all about the protocol, the Missus no clue either, all this in front of the head priest who really looks out of a Indiana Jones movie, his 10 priests, in front of a assistance of 150 persons, and under constant shooting by a film crew it IS a bit stressing….. And when the bride, groom, Missus, close family all start to have tears rolling, even I am known as having no heart, it has a certain effect. So, half of the small tissues I had prepared for the Miss were used by me ! I was deeply touched for sure. My big regret is not understanding the deep meaning of each actions. And communication problems, the Missus having no clue either, if I want to find it out I guess I will have to do some research and asking around. Anyway, everybody was very happy, and I think I gained a lot of good points with the people here. Afternoon was relaxed, the evening is what we could call the cocktail party, except that there is zero alcohol involved ! Just eating, chatting and drinking water or tea. Sadly it was seriously spoiled by the rain that lasted around 2 hours. A few interesting details : - - As the wedding ceremony is Hindu, only people of that believe attend, and that day it is the Muslim crew that handles the kitchen. It also means that the groom’s parents do not assist (they are Muslim), which must be very sad for the girl. They were represented by 2 persons of Miss Indo’s family. Of course once the ceremony finished, everybody mixes again - - Even if a couple arrive together, women sit with the women, men with the men, and this for Hindu as well as Muslims. - - There are 2 donation boxes, one for men (handled by a man), one for women (handled by a woman). And there are several little details like this. - - Everything is done on the spot, even the signature of the wedding act. An official is present, and the signature is one of the (many) sequences. - - There is zero alcohol involved, not even beer. But in a general way, even in the Hindu community I very seldom see alcohol being served. This could be a bit different this evening, as there is local dance group playing and the crowd will be composed of a lot of younger friends of the couple. Edit : Yep, Miss Indo just confirmed "need to buy local whisky and beer for young guys this evening" ! OK, after this long prose, a few pictures from yesterday : Of course food, and food, and food….. The above cake is very, very nice ! And small gifts again for the visitors Offerings for the ceremony (very small sample) Configuration for the ceremony Configuration for the evening By now the dogs are certain that those 2 legged animals are completely mad, and better hide from them and their noise ! Right now (Fri 07:30) : The Jaranan (have a look on Youtube) music / dance team is setting up their stage : And of course, a few additional loud speakers are required ……… The Jaranan thing should start at 09:00, so time to change my short and Tshirt to something better if I want to impress the local women ! To be continued P.S. : I am certain our board top photographers like @john luke and others would have a field day here, as there are really some interesting and not often seen things to picture. 6 1 2

Thai Spice
Sorry, I have been a bit lazy lately ! We haven't receive the pics or the video yet, so no great update on the ceremony. I guess it will take a few days before we get it, maybe even 1 or 2 weeks ? And I haven't found out yet how to reduce some of my own videos. Well, honestly, I haven't been really searching …... So, just a few pics for the moment. Preparation of the altar around which the main ceremony will take place : Hairdresser / male up artist at work on the bride and the Miss from early morning The old frog in full attire ! Yeah, yeah, I know…. I could have done with a bit of make up as well, you can see the stress building ! The Miss definitively looks better ! Note my extreme diplomacy, drinking whisky coke in a tea glass OK, next installment once I'll have received the pics and video ! 1
Thai Spice
Meanwhile on a complete different subject, it is a very important election day here today. "It will be the first time the country's presidential, parliamentary and regional elections are all taking place on the same day. And with some 192 million people eligible to vote that makes it one of the biggest and most complex one-day polls in the world. More than 245,000 candidates are running for around 20,000 national and local legislative seats. Complicating things further is the geography of Indonesia - an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands. Polling stations began opening in eastern Indonesia at 07:00 local time (22:00 GMT Tuesday). The country has three time zones, and western Indonesia, including the capital Jakarta, will vote from midnight GMT."
