Problems with 're-opening' on the other side of the pond, too...

Infections force Ford Motor to suspend production at two reopened plants.

"Ford Motor, which restarted its North American assembly plants this week, said on Wednesday that it stopped production temporarily at two plants in Chicago and Dearborn, Mich., after employees tested positive for the coronavirus..."

merlin_172619685_00c3be57-ff08-4eb6-954a-28360e1d6a57-jumbo.jpg

Well, there is a surprise …….

Factory shuts down temporary and send all its employees home for xx weeks. Of course those people will go shopping, have a walk, have contacts inside their family etc….

Statistically it is 100% sure that a certain number of those people will end up C19 virus carriers, and the vast majority of those will be asymptomatic (the symptomatic ones being sick or in the hospital, and therefore don’t risk to return to work..).

Later the company decides to restart production and calls back its workers. Now imagine one of those healthy asymptomatic carriers transmit the virus to one (or more) weak (or less resistant) person ? In the country of unions and lawsuits, you can imagine the consequences…

Hence a good idea would be to test all workers before allowing them back into the factory.

Even if this seems evident, it is not so easy !

-        Logistic problems (availability of tests to buy and have analysed)

-        Legal aspect (I am not sure an employer can legally impose this kind of test, in France highly likely not)

So the employer simply puts back everybody to work, and the inevitable happens….

So, in short : where will this madness of “protection” and “saving lives” gonna stop ? Because we will NEVER have zero carriers (same as for the flu, pneumonia etc..) and we cannot continue to quarantine every Joe that test positive, track all his contacts, contacts of contacts and quarantine the whole lot !

And all those smart guys having bragged about the “new normal” have now to make a decision, because closing down a factory each time ONE guy is detected infected is simply impossible.

But as we all know, politicians are not very keen at taking that kind of decisions !

Obviously they have digged themselves in a nice hole, and have no clue how to get out of it.

You made the assertion, back it up.

You'd make a great prosecutor.

Wear a mask. Be a man.

Or,...be a dead hamster.

HKU hamster research shows masks effective in preventing Covid-19 transmission

https://fightcovid19.hku.hk/hku-hamster-research-shows-masks-effective-in-preventing-covid-19-transmission/

Tests on hamsters showed wearing surgical masks can significantly reduce the non-contact transmission of the deadly Covid-19 virus, especially when masks were worn by infected individuals, according to a study led by HKU infectious disease expert Prof Yuen Kwok-yung.

The study, released on Sunday, shed light on an ongoing heated debate on whether wearing masks would help prevent the transmission of the deadly coronavirus.

In each set of the experiment, hamsters were separated in two groups and placed in two cages, with one of the groups infected with Covid-19.

In the first experiment, no surgical masks were placed between the two cages. In the second one, a surgical mask was placed closer to the healthy hamsters. In the third experiment, the mask was placed closer to the infected, as if the healthy ones or the infected were wearing masks.

With no partition in between the cages, two-thirds of the healthy hamsters were infected a week later. In the following two experiments with masks in between, the infection rates were lowered to one-third and one-sixth respectively.

Yuen urged the public to keep wearing masks with crowds in the public and in enclosed indoor areas despite the hot weather to help contain the invisible transmission.

Did the hamsters that died have previous adverse health features?

No, not unless you count an allergic reaction to duct tape.

More studies regarding face masks, this time from Edinburgh University.

<Now a new study by researchers at the University of Edinburgh has looked into the impact of different types of face mask on airflow ejected by a wearer when they breathed or coughed, including standard surgical masks, FFP2 respirators and cloth masks.

The researchers found all face masks without a valve, including cloth masks, reduced the distance exhaled air travelled in a forward direction by more than 90%. But they added that fit was essential, pointing out that “surgical, handmade masks, and face shields, generate significant leakage jets that have the potential to disperse virus-laden fluid particles by several metres,” and that such jets tend to be directed downwards or backwards.

Dr Simon Kolstoe, senior lecturer in evidence-based healthcare and university ethics adviser at the University of Portsmouth, said when it comes to the science there “isn’t that much to argue about”. He said the new study backs previous evidence that cloth masks were not as effective as FFP1 or FFP2 masks – equivalent to N95 masks – when it comes to preventing the transmission of viruses, but can direct the breath in different ways.

But Kolstoe said there was limited evidence about how effective cloth masks were, or whether they have a big impact. The upshot was a debate that was more political than scientific.>

"I have generally been impressed by the effectiveness of all the face coverings we tested. However, we discovered that some face coverings allow the emergence of downward or backward jets that people are not aware of and that could be a major hazard to others around them."

Dr Ignazio Maria ViolaProject coordinator, the University of Edinburgh’s School of Engineering

More information for people to make an informed choice as to the wearing or not of masks.

There's been a significant deterioration in the mental health of people using drug and addiction, and homeless services in Northern Ireland.

Organisations and charities supporting them have been giving evidence to the health committee at Stormont.

They told MLAs that therapies which now rely on remote or telephone contact due to the Covid-19 pandemic don't always work as a result.

Case workers have also noticed a dramatic increase in the misuse of alcohol and drugs as some service users are confined to rooms in hostels and unable to visit family or friends.

This has also led to an increase in the numbers of people who have taken an overdose.

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/11675374/new-coronavirus-outbreak-china-mutant-strain/

"A CORONAVIRUS expert fears a mystery new outbreak hitting China is a mutant strain of the deadly bug that leaves sufferers sick for even longer.

Worryingly, the strain is behaving differently in patients in northeast China where five million people across two cities are virtually sealed off following spiralling new infections.

Dr Qiu Haibo, an expert in critical care medicine at the National Health Commission, told reporters new clusters of infections in the northeastern border provinces of Jilin and Heilongjiang in recent weeks were raising concern about a second wave.

The prominent doctor said there are signs that the bug is changing as it spreads again in China.

Patients in the northeastern clusters are carrying the virus for longer than earlier cases in Wuhan - the world's original, infamous epicentre - before they show symptoms.

Plus, those infected by the mutated strain were taking far longer to recover.

Qiu told state broadcaster CCTV on Tuesday: “This causes a problem, as they don’t have any symptoms.

“So when they gather with their families they don’t care about this issue and we see family cluster infections.

They rarely had a high temperature, and tended to suffer damage to the lungs rather than across multiple organs, he added."

The expert said it appeared the changed bug had been imported from abroad.

He did not say where he believed the mutant strain started, but both Jilin and Heilongjiang border Russia, which has reported a huge outbreak in recent weeks.

etc. etc."

I was feeling pretty good till I read this mornings installment of the new batch of studies, research, findings and expert opinions.

My conclusion is that this will be the first time that mankind has actually thought something to death.

Sounds about right...

...“some conservatives are denying and repressing fear, but that doesn’t mean they are cool cucumbers. Fears of economic devastation (and the anger by conservative activists in Michigan and elsewhere) may even reflect displacement of the fear. For all we know, (those) who are explicitly denying the problem are experiencing (even) more stress and anxiety than those who are not.”

I guess the Swedes just don't like being herded.

Coronavirus: Sweden’s death toll becomes world's highest per capita

After continuing to shun lockdowns Sweden's coronavirus death rate has risen sharply in the last week to the highest in the world per capita.

Sweden now has the highest coronavirus death rate in the world per capita over the last
week after continuing to shun lockdown.

The government has insisted that its softer approach to dealing with the pandemic will pay
off in the long run as restaurants, bars and businesses remain open.

But over the last seven days, Sweden had an average of 6.08 deaths per million inhabitants -
more than any other country in the world.

This is in comparison to 5.57 in the UK, 4.28 in Belgium, 4.11 in the US, 2.62 in Spain,
2.29 in Italy, and 2.26 in France.

Should make the poms happy, no longer topping the list.
