Camping during black fly season in MN we mixed a small amount of spearmint oil with baby oil to keep the flies off us. If it worked on black flies I would imagine it would work on the pesky flies around here. Lemon eucalyptus oil and citronella are good too if you want something more natural, no good for mozzies if it's a hostile environment though!
