Really wishing I hadn't introduced the village to mulled wine some time ago.

It's cold up here (relatively 😏) and there has been a steady stream of visitors over the last hour asking about "lon falang wine".

I brought a load of sachets of the mulled spices over with me and scored a cheap (again relatively) box of red. That went a few nights ago and I am f***d if I am going to open a 1200 baht bottle to waste on anyone other than me and the Mrs 😬.

Just dragged my sorry ass out of bed, was a good night seeing the dreadful 2020 out and the hopeful 2021 in. Far too many empty cans and bottles in the kitchen to tidy up.

Need to get some food inside me, can feel an ommlette coming on with several large mugs of tea.

Been a strange day for me which as it was the first day of 2021 it could have seen me in trouble on 2 counts.

Firstly yesterday I went to Tesco to buy some haggis for last nights meal; woke up this morning and realised I had left my credit card in the self service payment machine.  Panic ensued and so first thing this morning we zipped to Tesco where happily I was told that somebody had handed my card in. Panic over but I was lucky, could have been so different.

Secondly, Porn needed some feminine products from Boots and Neath Boots was closed as were 2 other branches in Swansea and Llanelli . Luckily the one in the retail park in Merthyr Tydfil was open so as we were already in the car we headed there from Neath. This is a 28 minute journey straight down the A465. Officially we are on lockdown and we should not travel far except for essentials but the products that Porn needed were essential for her.

Now this was all good until I made a decision to leave Merthyr and return with a slight detour over the Brecon Beacons. Just needed to head a few miles up the Brecon road and then turn left to head over the mountains to Neath (adds about 15 minutes on to the route). We have a very well know mountain called Pen Y Fan which has been in the papers recently with visitors from as far away as London so I supposed I should have known that police might be around. Anyhow a mile up the A470 heading for my turn off we hit a road check of 3 police cars all blue lights flashing.

A nice policewoman stepped out in the road and signalled me to pullover. I was asked where I was going which I said home to Neath which got the guy asking why I was 20 miles from Neath.  I explained I had been to Boots which of course gets him asking me why I have driven to Merthyr when Neath etc was closer.  I explained that as it was 01 Jan all the stores near us were closed (true) and my wife specifically liked Boots brand plus I had a £18 voucher.

He still wasn't convinced as I was heading to Brecon which I retorted I was just taking the scenic route home. He then says he was still confused but told me to turn around and go home which I did. I was civil, he was civil although he did take note of my registration. Castigated, I headed home and will now ensure I do not do Porn a favour and next time she will need to make do with products from our local Tesco.

Now on the Lemoncello and watching David Gilmour live in Pompei.

Sounds like quite the police state - what should it matter where you are driving if there's just the two of you in the car; it's not like you're out mixing with the local crowds or anything...I guess when they say "essential travel" it gives them the leeway to pull crap like this...

It was probably that I was on a road heading for a very popular tourist spot, I tried to explain that I was heading home on a longer scenic route but was turned around after a nice chat.

I do appreciate the job they have been tasked with, I am sure they would rather be doing other, more important, duties.

It's only because people let them hassle them they get away with it. Police can't arrest everyone if you refuse to obey them. I don't take any notice of this stay home Nazi bullshit and just do what I like.

That is all well and good mate, but they can give you a fine of up to 10 grand. Reality check, a guy I know got stopped ignoring the restrictions and now has a fine of 200 quid for his first offence. It is real and people ignoring the restrictions is the reason this virus is spreading like wild fire.
